Hipower EHR Micro Grid Expands Green Power Options

When it comes to portable power on a jobsite, a generator paired with a battery energy storage system (BESS) is a game changer, significantly increasing project sustainability compared with a stand-alone generator. The Hipower EHR Solar Battery Generator takes hybrid power systems to the next level of sustainability by adding an integrated solar array, providing a new way to dramatically reduce jobsite emissions and fuel use.

A self-contained microgrid that relies on the sun

Developed in collaboration with United Rentals, the EHR Solar Battery Generator leverages the sun as its main energy source. The onboard 10kW solar array, which sits atop the unit and features extendable panels, captures the sun’s energy and converts it to electric power that’s stored in the batteries. When the batteries near depletion, the generator can provide backup power. Instead of a diesel generator, the unit’s 50kVA generator runs on cleaner-burning propane.

This microgrid can be mounted on a 20-by-8-foot trailer or a skid and provides enough juice to power container offices and restroom trailers or charge electric tools and equipment.

Slashing generator run time

Hybrid power solutions minimize generator run time by storing extra generated energy in batteries and running on battery power whenever possible. The EHR Solar Battery Generator cuts run time even more dramatically thanks to the solar array, which charges the batteries when the sun shines. Only when the batteries begin to run low due to reduced sunlight (at night, for instance) or increased demand does the smart grid controller turn on the generator. Once sufficient solar power is available again, the controller turns it off.

A flexible solution

The solution isn’t small, but it’s lightweight and portable. Trailer-mounted versions are easy to tow to the jobsite and move as needed. Skid-mounted versions can be placed, and moved, with a forklift. If you need more power, you can add an external solar array.

A variety of applications

The microgrid can be put to work in many jobsite applications that require 50kVA or less. It’s ideal for powering temporary office spaces such as container offices and mobile office trailers as well as guard shacks and restroom trailers or trailer complexes.

It can also be used as an onsite charging station for electric tools and equipment ranging from welders, drills and saws to lights and aerial lifts. For small to medium-size jobsites, it could potentially serve as the single source of power, depending on the load requirements.

Wide-ranging benefits

Hybrid power solutions in general offer many advantages, especially for eco-conscious companies. Those advantages are magnified with the EHR Solar Battery Generator.

Low emissions

When running on the battery pack or solar energy, the system produces no emissions. If the generator kicks on, it produces significantly lower levels of nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and carbon dioxide than a diesel generator would.

A bonus: Propane generators don’t require diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) to burn cleanly, as many diesel generators do.

A cleaner, quieter jobsite

Reduced generator runtime means less exhaust. When the propane generator does run, the exhaust is virtually odorless and colorless, unlike the exhaust from a diesel generator. That’s a benefit for workers and people living or working near the jobsite.

Another benefit of reduced generator runtime: Less noise. The EHR Solar Battery Generator runs silently when the generator is off.

Reduced maintenance

The propane generator needs oil and fuel service every 250 hours. With solar panels bearing the primary responsibility for charging the batteries, it takes a long time for the generator to reach that 250-hour mark. Extended maintenance intervals reduce the environmental and monetary costs of changing oil and filters. Longer maintenance intervals also mean fewer workflow interruptions, preserving time and budget.

No risk of a diesel spill

A propane generator eliminates the need to store diesel fuel onsite. There is no need for secondary containment because there is no chance of a diesel spill.

Balancing costs and benefits

The EHR Solar Battery Generator is not the least expensive option for portable power. But cleaner, quieter and nearly maintenance-free operation offers advantages for anyone interested in boosting the sustainability of their jobsite. And the upfront costs are offset by savings on fuel and maintenance.

For companies that want to advertise their values, the EHR Solar Battery Generator serves as a visual symbol of a commitment to sustainability thanks to the solar panels. When used to power a job trailer, it’s one of the first things visitors see when they enter the site and immediately conveys an image of a company that cares about the environment and the health and well-being of workers and neighbors. That’s a powerful message to send.
