The primary difference between road plates and trench covers is their material and intended use. Road plates, also known as street plates, are made from heavy-duty steel or composite materials and are designed to support the weight of vehicles and heavy equipment crossing over trenches or excavations. Trench covers are often made of lighter composite materials, making them portable and ideal for covering smaller holes or creating safe pedestrian walkways. Composite trench covers can often be installed by one or two people, whereas steel or composite road plates require equipment to lift.
Due to their significant weight, steel and composite road plates require lifting equipment, such as a forklift or a crane with a plate lifting tool, for installation and removal. They can be secured with pins or by building an asphalt edge to prevent shifting. Lightweight composite trench covers can often be installed manually by one or two workers and may be secured with bolts if needed.
To determine the number and size of road plates or trench covers, measure your trench width and add a minimum of 12 to 24 inches of overlap on each side for safety. For assistance deciding the number and size of road plates needed for your project, contact a United Rentals representative.
